SchoolhouseTeachers.com Review

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine has a wonderful division all homeschooling families should check out - SchoolhouseTeachers.com is full of wonderful opportunities for practically everyone. This website offers parents 25 different subjects to choose from and tons of activities to go with the curriculum. In turn, children of all ages are given the opportunity to learn an array of skills ranging from music to a foreign language, from PreK to high school. Although I do not personally parent a child with Special Needs, I was very thankful for the articles offered to those who do. This site offers the first month for only $1 and then $5.95 every month after that. Other bonuses offered on the site are hundreds of ebooks, planners and even guidance for choosing a college.

I took a couple of hours to explore the site before deciding which parts I would use with my own kiddos. I felt like with each subject, I actually knew the teacher planning each lesson. They were very personable and I immediately felt as though they had my child's best interest in mind. One of the first items that caught my eye was the checklist. This is a great tool offered to those who use this site for lesson plans and activities. Having that would be a great help when going over monthly goals and to see what all was accomplished.

I spent more time looking in the Pre-K/Elementary section because my "students" are 2,4 and 6. As I looked through the activities and lessons, I felt as though there was not as much as I would have liked to see for their particular ages. I would have loved to see more activities for writing numerals, counting, and simple addition.

I decided to use the Writing and Lapbooks. I was very pleased with the December Lesson for Writing. I have never dipped into teaching my boys about who writes the story and the different points of view. I found it very easy to teach them the different components of a story with what was given in the lesson. Because mine aren't able to spell very well without help from Mommy, we decided to do "role play" from the different point of views. They had tons of fun with that.

Using the Lapbooks was great! The boys very much enjoy being read to and I love reading to them. Sometimes in the mix of school and our crazy life in general, just sitting down and simply reading a story gets overlooked. The boys liked the activities afterward. It was fun watching them listen so closely because they knew an activity was coming up for what we just read.

Overall, I think the site is great! I would definitely recommend to families who plan to use this site, to use it the entire year for which subjects they choose. I would have liked to see more for the PreK/Kindergarten section, but what we did choose to use we loved. The lessons we used were very thorough and fun!!

  1. Fantastic review Kelsey. I have enjoyed looking over the lapbooks as well. I must admit that, although I have been a member of SchoolhouseTeachers.com for some time, I haven't used it nearly enough and I didn't realize what excellent lapbooks that they had. Thanks for sharing about them. I am really excited that you are on the crew this year.
