Go Science Review

What We Received and How We Used It:

For this review with Library and Educational Services, we received two of the seven Go Science DVDs. We were able to choose which two DVDs we wanted and I decided to go with the Life Science and Weather Go Science DVD and the Engineering, Design and Flight Go Science DVD.

Our days here are filled with pool time, squeaky swings, bouncing on the trampoline and free bowling. Other than an occasional cartoon in the morning, my boys do not watch much TV during the day. Bedtime is about the best time for them, and by them I am referring to Kollin (7) and Kolt (5), to calm down long enough to really focus on something. I handed them the DVD cases as I put one of them in and the looks on their faces were priceless. I laughed a little and told them to just wait until they actually watched the DVD before they made crazy faces. We popped in the DVD (they chose Life Science and Weather first), I pulled their door and headed to my room. All I heard for the next hour was, "Whoa!" and "That's so cool!" and "Did you see that?"

Pretty much, it was pure bliss for this Momma.

What I Thought About It All:

Of course, if it is something my boys rave about and they ask to watch it again - I am going to love it too.

Although the DVDs are obviously based in the 80s, they were pumped full of fun, education-filled experiments. I loved that with each experiment, God is given credit. I just love that! Another thing I loved was how fast paced it was, this really kept their attention and they didn't get bored or sidetracked at all, even in a room full of Legos and HotWheels. That has got to say something!

I asked Kollin and Kolt what was their favorite part of watching the videos and here is what I got:

Kollin (7): "My favorite part was the experiment where they mixed really, really hot water with really, really icy water and it started steaming and blowing up smoke!"
(From Life Science and Weather)

Kolt (5): "My favorite part is how in all of the experiments a different kid gets to help."
(From Life Science and Weather)

Overall, I am loving having these DVDs in our collection for our home school. These are going to be great "extras" when we start digging into science in the upcoming school year. The prices are very reasonable and I definitely see us ordering more of these and attempting some of the experiments together at home.

TOS Review - Kinder Cottage Publishing ...

Kinder Cottage Review

Kinder Cottage Publishing is a company that was started by a couple, Howard and Ann, in 2012. Together, they have four boys and reside in the state of Florida.

One of their first projects was publishing a Peter Rabbit series. This series contains ten books. Each of these books are hardback and are just $4.00 each. You can also purchase all ten books as a set for just $30.00.
The following are the titles in the Peter Rabbit series:

The Tale of Peter Rabbit
Peter Rabbit at the Farm
Peter Rabbit's Christmas
How Peter Rabbit Went to Sea
Peter Rabbit Goes A-Visiting
Peter Rabbit's Easter
Peter Rabbit's Birthday
When Peter Rabbit Went to School
Peter Rabbit and the Little Boy
Peter Rabbit and Jack the Jumper

The books in the series do not go in any particular order, other than the first one. The first book is an introduction to Peter Rabbit and his family. The other books following after The Tale of Peter Rabbit are all adventures that he has.

The Peter Rabbit series is intended for children ages 3-9.

In each of these books, Howard and Ann kept all of the original illustrations to preserve the history of the Peter Rabbit series. Being that these stories were originally written in the 1920's, they have modernized the wording in the books so it is easier for kiddos to understand. Although much of the words have been updated, the original story is kept in place and still holds it's true meaning and the lesson to be taught. There were many of the original words too, which were fun to watch the boys catch.

Along with the Peter Rabbit series, Kinder Cottage Publishing has also released a Wizard of Oz series. Howard and Ann also have several other projects they are working on now, including publishing several autobiographies and books that were written by Howard's mother.

What We Received and How We Used It:

For this review, our family received two hardback books from the Peter Rabbit Series. The books we received were Peter Rabbit and the Little Boy and How Peter Rabbit Went to Sea

Kinder Cottage ReviewKinder Cottage Review

I let the boys pick which one they wanted to read first and they picked Peter Rabbit and the Little Boy. We read these books at bedtime and I was so happy to see the three big kiddos (ages 7, 5 and 3) all interested in the same stories. Often times I hear, "This is babyish" from the big boys or Kruz will be so restless and have no interest whatsoever. It was nice to have all of their attention at the same time.

Because the pictures are different than what they normally see in books, they asked lots of questions. We were able to talk a lot about the illustrations from "back then" in the words of Kollin (7). I loved that these books brought loads of questions and led us into talks about some of the different words we had never heard. It was fun letting the boys try to figure out what they thought some of the words meant. Their answers were hilarious!

Each of the books had over 60 pages, so we read a little bit each night. It was fun letting the boys predict what they thought would happen next. It took us 4 nights to read each book.

What I Thought About It All:

I was very pleased with the books we received from Kinder Cottage Publishing.

We all really enjoyed these books from the Peter Rabbit series! I love that all of the pictures in the book are the originals, this leaves so much richness in the stories and their histories.

Peter Rabbit is such a mischievous little bunny. The books were fun to read with them, kept their attention and started so many funny conversations about all sorts of stuff from what the little boy was wearing to how Peter Rabbit was spanked by his Momma.

The price is very reasonable for these books and will definitely become classics in each home they enter!

TOS Review - Apologia Educational Ministries ...

Apologia Review

If you have been following my blog for a while now, you know that Apologia is no stranger here. When we first started homeschooling, I had more than one seasoned homeschooling Momma rave about Apologia and their Bible-based curriculum. This is the third curriculum we have used from Apologia and each time I am more impressed with the in-depth, scripture based, fun and exciting teachings.

Just in case you are not familiar with Apologia Educational Ministries, here is a little bit of information. Apologia is a curriculum company based solely for homeschooling families. This company offers several different subjects from Science to History to Language Arts to Biblical Worldview. They also offer products for the parents as well, such as planners. Check out their website www.apologia.com for all of their great products!

Because we reviewed part of their What We Believe series, I'll tell you more about this part of their ministry. Apologia has teamed up with Summit Ministries to bring homeschooling families a curriculum based on the Word of God on how to train children to view the world through the eyes of God, using scripture to reveal along the way the truth about our world.

There are four volumes in this series:
Volume 1: Who Is God?
Volume 2: Who Am I?
Volume 3: Who Is My Neighbor?
Volume 4: What On Earth Can I Do?

Apologia recognizes the negative influences our children are in contact with every day: peer pressure, messages sent through the television shows they come across and the music they hear while flipping through the radio. Their goal is to provide a series that will direct our children on the right path to understanding how God wants them to view the world. Even more than that, the series will teach children some of the essential beliefs of the Christian faith.

This series has been created for children in grades 1-6.

What We Received and How We Used It:

For this review we received the complete set for Volume 4 (Biblical Worldview of Stewardship) of the What We Believe series, entitled What On Earth Can I Do?

In our curriculum package we received the following materials:

Apologia ReviewApologia Review

Apologia ReviewApologia Review

When I saw the opportunity to review another Apologia curriculum, of course I jumped on it! And then when I read about the series, I prayed about it - that our family would be selected for this curriculum.

One question I hear on nearly a daily basis from Kollin (7) is "Why am I here? What does God want me to do? I'm just a kid." I can only tell him so many times that God has something for him and through prayer he'll begin to see what that purpose is. That answer only keeps my deep 7 year old happy for so long. I knew this book and journal would be wonderful for both of us. I knew it would be a great explanation for Kollin and would satisfy the hunger in him to know more about what his purpose is. And I knew it would be good for me too, to help answer his questions and to be able to fill those days of doubt for him with scripture and promises from God's Word.

What On Earth Can I Do? contains eight truth revealing lessons:
Lesson 1: Your Story or God's Story?
Lesson 2: Who Put You In Charge?
Lesson 3: Will You Be Found Faithful?
Lesson 4: Where Is Your Treasure?
Lesson 5: Where Does Your Time Go?
Lesson 6: Whose Life Is It Anyway?
Lesson 7: Why Isn't It Easy Being Green?
Lesson 8: What Will Happen When The Master Returns?

Each lesson begins with 'The Big Idea' which explains the overall purpose of the lesson and what will be explored, revealed and taught. There are stories on real people, biblical truths, prayers, fictional stories and so much more used to portray to the learner (and teacher as far as I'm concerned) what it means to be fearfully and wonderfully made through the eyes of our Savior.

Kollin and I used the What On Earth Can I Do? book on our own. Kollin also used the What On Earth Can I Do? Junior Notebooking Journal as well as the coloring book we also received. We read in this book just three days a week and Kollin worked through his journal and colored as I would read. Because this book is made for children from Kollin's age all the way to sixth grade, most of the material was above his head. I was able to read ahead of time and mark the material I knew he would understand, take in and would benefit him for his age now. Through the time of the review, we successfully worked through all of lesson one. Because the lessons are so incredibly in-depth, we had to work a little slower and read less than what is suggested in the layout of the lessons in the book.

What I Thought About It All:

It's so obvious how much our family loves Apologia Educational Ministries! Their passion to provide homeschooling families with quality, affordable material is heart warming and I love their firm stance on teaching so many subjects based on God's Word.

From what Kollin and I read in the What On Earth Can I Do? book excites me! Although I feel like much of the material and stories were more than he could handle, I know in my heart this book and journal are going to benefit Kollin and the rest of our children in the years to come. With each school year, I plan to get this book back out and go more in depth each time.

The stories throughout the lessons are so intriguing and relate so well to the purpose of the book. Although this book is made to be used by students up to sixth grade, I firmly believe teens, young adults and even Moms and Dads will learn from this book.

TOS Review - Golden Prairie Press ...

Golden Prairie Press Review

Golden Prairie Press is a company created and ran by a self taught historian, Amy Puetz. Amy is a homeschool graduate herself, which I loved and really think gives her an insight into her customers! Amy Puetz has such a love for history and unveiling God's work in exciting stories.

Golden Prairie Press is an elementary age based company. Although the curriculum targets grades 1-6, the material could be used for older ages as well.

The curriculum in Golden Prairie Press uses a multi sensory approach to teaching the material. From music to skits to crafts, your child is certain to learn history in a fun and inviting way!

The Golden Prairie Press website also offers books for young boys and young girls, costume books, cookbooks and other history curriculums.

What We Received and How We Used It:

For this review, we received the Digital Heros & Heroines of the the Past: American History Curriculum ($98.99)

Our set of material had 6 downloads which included:
Heros and Heroines of the Past: Part 1
Heros and Heroines of the Past: Part 2
Historical Skits eBook
Additional Materials CD
Listen to Some History (MP3 audio download)
Sing Some History (audio download)

The main text (Parts 1 and 2) are broken down into two sections. The first section is based on a lower level and the second section has more facts, digging much deeper into the information for the older ones learning.

The Additional Material CD has some really great extras to supplement into the lessons. Coloring pages, timelines, maps, games and examples of historical art are naming just a few.

The Listen to Some History download includes 20 original speeches, sermons, poems and documents that are mentioned throughout the lessons. To give you an example, The Bill of Rights and The Constitution are a couple that are included in this download.

The Sing Some History download has some fun music to incorporate into teaching time. As much as my kids love music, they really enjoyed this part while working on the crafts. Some of the songs to enjoy are Yankee Doodle, Dixie and She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain.

Golden Prairie Press Review

There is also an American History Coloring Book (9.99) offered to purchase in addition to the above materials.

What I Thought About It All:

I adored this curriculum and as much as the boys learned, I'd say they enjoyed it too.

Having the lessons broken down was wonderful! The first section geared toward their ages was just enough information to catch their attention. They easily sat through the time it took me to read the material to them. And anytime they had extra questions, I could just flip over and read them more of the in-depth facts.

The boys learn really well through the multi sensory approach. The crafts were wonderful, easy, and didn't call for anything too crazy (which made it even easier for this Momma). Kruz (age 3) was able to participate with us as well.

Here we are making the teepee from Lesson 1 where we learned all about Native Americans. I enjoyed watching the boys work together and come up with creative ways to mimic what Native Americans would have decorated their homes in.

In these pictures, Kollin and Kolt are making their own canoes. We also made canoes out of playdough as well, which was another craft idea given in Lesson 1.
See Kolt's face? All smiles for Golden Prairie Press!

TOS Review - Egglo Entertainment

Egglo Review

Egglo Entertainment (www.eggloentertainment.com) is a company that was created by a Mom, Darcie Cobos, who wanted to find a creative way to explain the importance and true meaning of Easter to her own children and other children in her community. After hosting an egg hunt in the dark one night near Easter, allowing the children to find their eggs by flashlight, this became a huge hit in her community. An idea was born, put into motion and with many other people's help, Egglo Entertainment was created.

With this Bible verse in mind, "The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:5), Denise has the goal to teach children that Jesus is the Light in the darkness of this world. She continues to use this verse as a theme for Egglo Entertainment. After all, this is her main goal for creating this company, that children will see Jesus as their Light in the darkness of this world.

Egglo Entertainment uses an interactive storybook, The Egg-cellent Easter Adventure to tell a story about three children and a dog who take off on a wonderful journey. With each glowing egg, they read a new Bible verse and find a clue that will help them continue their journey. Ultimately, they learn the Easter story and in the end know that Jesus is the Light! This book is 40 pages and has wonderful illustrations. A DVD or audio download of this book is also available for purchase.
Egglo Review

Egglo Entertainment also offers a Program Guide for parents, teachers and church leaders that assist in planning and organizing an amazing way of teaching children the true meaning of Easter. This guide offers 60 pages of goodies like coloring pages, devotions ideas, how-to instructions, snack suggestions and much, much more. Of course, Egglo Entertainment offers all of the stuff you will need to conduct your egg hunt and reinforce The Egg-cellent Easter Adventure like glowing eggs, bible verse scrolls and an array of stickers.

There are so many products to choose from with Egglo Entertainment. Parents, teachers and church leaders can pick, choose and create their own perfect basket full of goodies to create this amazing experience!
Here are the products offered and the links to see more information on them:

Egglo Review
Egglo Entertainment can be used with children ages 4-13.

What We Received and How We Used It:

In our package from Egglo Entertainment, we received the Glow in the Dark Egglo EggsThe Egg-cellent Easter Adventure BookThe Egg-cellent Easter Adventure (Book Audio Download), Egglo Treasures Scripture Scrolls and a downloadable Program Guide. Everything we received was of great quality.

Because we used this product before Easter, I decided to use the interactive storybook as a bedtime ritual for the boys for a few nights with a "surprise" waiting for them at the end of the week. I was able to play the book audio download for them on our computer and I would show them the illustrations as the story went on. At the end of the week when the story was completed, we headed outside in our pajamas and all. The boys were a little shocked and confused that instead of their bedtime story, we were headed to the backyard. We sat together and talked about John 1:5 again and what that verse means to us. Instead of the boys racing against one another to see who could find the most eggs, I asked them to work together to find all of them. In each egg was a scripture scroll and at the end when all of them were found, we read the scriptures together.

Talk about some worn out kiddos. Bedtime was a cinch that night ...

Egglo Review

What I Thought About It All:

Overall, I am super impressed! Even more so, I am thankful for people like Darcie Cobos and companies like Egglo Entertainment. We live in a world today where holidays have become very materialized. Since the very beginning, we have always taught our children the true meaning of Easter. This particular day is such a magnificent day for followers of Christ and I want my children to know the importance of why we celebrate, not just about the Easter Bunny. Egglo Entertainment has given me the tools, ideas and an amazing interactive storybook to help do just that.

Need it even be said how much the boys enjoyed this activity? I mean what kid wouldn't want to hunt for glow-in-the-dark- Easter eggs? Kollin (age 7), Kolt (age 5) and Kruz (age 3) all participated in the fun and all of them enjoyed it. This has been one activity all of them have understood on the same level, Jesus is our Light in a world full of darkness.

TOS Review - Motivated Moms

Motivated Moms Review
What is Motivated Moms?

Motivated Moms was originally started by two Moms, Deann Polanco and Janet Russell, several years ago as a way to offer other Moms the perfect planning tool to keep a clean home without going crazy in the process. After life changes for both Janet and then Deann, the reigns were handed off to Susan Cramer who is still running the company today. Susan continues on the legacy of offering Moms a great way to keep their homes in order with this wonderful chore planning system.

Originally, Motivated Moms was only offered in a traditional book format. Now we are given two great options to choose from, an app or printable EBook

The app is for iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch and Android ($1.99 for the first two months and $0.99 for each additional month or $7.99 for the entire year).

Motivated Moms Review

The EBook format (8.00) can be downloaded and printed. The EBook is offered in eight versions to ensure each Mom gets exactly what she needs. Motivated Moms has truly thought of all different ways to offer the EBook, in color or black and white, with or without encouraged Bible Reading, one day per page or one week per page, half size pages or full size pages. Depending on the layout you choose, there are also extras like a place for your meal planning and spots to add activities. Motivated Moms ReviewMotivated Moms Review

Motivated Moms Review
Motivated Moms Review

On the chore planner, most of the cleaning is done Monday through Friday, leaving Saturdays and Sundays to simple tasks like 'Water the house plants' and 'Clip and organize coupons'. Motivated Moms does not forget the down time either we Moms deserve. On the planner are times for pampering yourself, doing a craft or having fun with a hobby.

What I Received and How I Used It:

I received the opportunity to review an EBook version of the Motivated Moms chore planning system. I was a bit overwhelmed when I sat down to choose which one I liked best and whereas, the color options were more appealing to me the logical woman in me said not to waste the color ink. I chose the 2014 Motivated Moms Half-Size Chore Planner with Scheduled Bible Reading {Black and White}.

Over the course of six weeks, I used this planner to delegate all of my housework and other tasks like, 'clip the children's nails'. Yep, that's on there and to be honest, I need that reminder. The first week or so was a little rough and I struggled with getting the hang of doing a little at a time. The point is though, for this housework thing to be stress free and once I saw it all coming together, I was elated and oh so ready to make this chore planner a habit. When I came to tasks like 'Clean off the top shelf of the refrigerator' I did not want to leave the rest of it dirty. So I ended up cleaning it out at it's entirety. I know the point of this planner is to do a little at a time, but it was great in the next few days to be able to check off the other tasks like 'Clean middle shelf of the refrigerator' and 'Clean bottom shelf of the refrigerator'.

Here are a few shots of some of my progress:

Confession: We've lived in this home for three years and I've never cleaned the oven. It felt pretty good, I must say.

What I Thought About It All:

Let me admit this first: I am the Momma who looks at the big picture of housework. And doing that, I in turn hyperventilate often. This is me: I go to the kitchen to tidy it up, see a dirty sock on the floor, go to toss it in the laundry room which in turn leads me to noticing just how much laundry has piled up, which reminds me to go check in the rooms for all the other dirty clothes, which in turn leads me to all the messes in every room - me.hyperventilating. Maybe a little exaggerated (not really), you get the picture. I struggle with the concept of "a little bit everyday". Using my Motivated Moms Chore Planner pretty much forced me to be the opposite of me - and it worked

At first, I was a little apprehensive - because what did I do? Looked through the whole dang planner and saw all that I was expected to accomplish.

Deep breaths Kelsey, deep breaths.

With a little hesitation that this would actually work for me, I punched holes in the printed papers and into a notebook it went. A cute one, I might add. It gives me more umph to get the jobs done.

When I started, I noticed the majority of the daily chores I already did at some point in the day. Some of them, like wiping down the kitchen, I do several times a day. Then there were others like "Make the Beds" that I did not do. Did you know it takes me less than 10 minutes to make my bed and the boys' beds? Who knew! I know it sounds crazy, but coming into a room with a bed all nice and neat made me breath a little easier seeing all the toys in the floor. Making our beds has now become habit, I'm telling you - it's a wonderful thing.

I love this chore planner and highly recommend it to all the Moms I know: working in or out of the home, homeschooling or not. This planner can be beneficial to our home, our children and our sanity.

TOS Review - Science4Us.com

Science4Us Review

What is Science4Us.com?

Science4Us.com is a complete, digital science curriculum. This complete curriculum is geared for the grade levels Kindergarten through Second Grade, can also be used as a great review for Third Grade through Fifth Grade and is based on State Standards. Science4Us.com is offered at $7.95/Per Month/Per Child. The team at Science4Us.com not only want your child to learn science, but to like it as well.

There are four main sections to choose from: Earth and Space, Physical Science, Inquiry and Life Science. Within these titles, there are over 350 online lessons to explore.

Science4Us Review
Science4Us.com offers the opportunity for your child to learn science at its finest. When first beginning, the parent/teacher may access a Teacher's Resources Guide that will lead you through the lesson at it's entirety and in doing so will boost self confidence in teaching the lesson. All of the modules are based on a Five "E" motive: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate. The first three, Engage, Explore and Explain, are all implemented through online and offline activities. Some of the online activities include videos, games and other interactive lessons. The Elaborate portion of the unit does just that, it allows the student to elaborate and investigate further into what they are learning about. When all is said and done, your child will be evaluated to see just what they learned during their studies. And no worries to parents and teachers, you are able to see exactly what their process has been in the Student Report section.

Each child has their own Log In information and Lab to complete their sessions in.

Science4Us Review
What We Received and How We Used It:

Our family received a Six Month Membership to the Science4Us.com Online Subscription (for up to four students). With this membership we were given full access to the website, including all of the activities, videos, digital notebooks and teaching resources.

Because this curriculum is based for both Kollin (age 7) and Kolt (age 5), I used Science4Us.com as our leading science curriculum over the course of our review period. We started on Earth and Space, jumping into the History of Earth and following with the Materials Unit and Features Unit.

The weather just happened to be super nice this particular day and any opportunity we can accomplish school outside, we do! We set up a blanket, our small box of basic materials (construction paper, glue, scissors and colored pencils) and got to work. In these photos above, Kollin and Kolt are working on sorting their pictures of fossils and living things.

What We Thought About It All:

I have been very much impressed with Science4Us.com. Once I was able to maneuver through the Teaching Tools, I was able to quickly prepare their science studies. And with confidence, I might add. Science was never my most sought after subject in school and to be honest, I have always felt inadequate in this department. After using Science4Us.com, I felt an urge for science to start that day. I know the boys fed off of my own enthusiasm and with much more ease than most days, we breezed through science.

I would say my biggest rave, other than the abundant resources given with this website, is the balance of the student working alone and also being given the opportunity to have great discussions with the parent/teacher and/or other students. Kollin and Kolt both love their independence while learning and this Momma loves being able to engage in what her kiddos are learning. There was such a blissful happy-medium to this. They had several opportunities to learn alone online and then we were able to sit together and do projects and discussions. Pure bliss.

The only hiccup we ran into, which I totally expect to in science, is the teaching of Evolution as opposed to Creation. Because we choose to teach our children based on God's Word, I did add that into our study on the History of Earth and therefore had to skip over a few of the videos and activities in the History of Earth module. I do not want my children to be ignorant in only knowing Creation, so I did choose to teach them how some other's believe in Evolution. In order to make up for the few activities we decided to skip, we read out of the books of Genesis and Job.
